We all know that today the choice of a good mouthpiece is a fundamental part to develop the sound on the saxophone. Over the years, the mouthpiece, has evolved, and today we can find a wide variety of nozzles on the market.
MATERIAL: Most of the nozzles are made of ebonite, obtained from the vulcanization of rubber, but also find it on various metals, crystals or similar plastics.
Several studies claim that they are the characteristics and technical dimensions which give the tonal color to each nozzle model, being the material of manufacturing a complement to these peculiar features
CHAMBER: nozzles with a concave, great camera work very well on the classical interpretation, since they produce a sound softer or less heartbreaking. On the contrary, in jazz and popular music the saxophonists play often normally loose gray and with open nozzles and smaller cameras. They are appropriate so that baffle, or "roof", it is closest to the shank. For that reason creates a fast and direct air flow. This produces at the same time, a more direct and clear sound. Although large openings, and the voluminous sound, they are commonly associated with metal mouthpieces, any nozzle can have one. This allows greater flexibility in tuning, allowing effects used in jazz or modern music.
Classical performers in general tend to opt for more hard rods and a mouthpiece with a narrow opening, producing a darker sound and stable but less flexible.
OPENING: Fundamental to the sound issuing part since it is the space between the Reed and the mouthpiece. A greater opening allows a higher vibration of cane but it also requires a greater flow of air, and on the contrary a smaller opening, makes more noticeable vibration of the Reed. In the graph can see left the types of most common openings (very open, open, medium or closed)
The interpreter must also take into account work lung capacity can help to improve the constant sound, as well as the time of study and dedication.
